Man sets his Mercedes Benz on fire in UAE

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for deliberately setting his car on fire. Dibba police received a report at 5:30pm on Tuesday, February 23 about a burning Mercedes Benz in Al Wurayah area, United Arab Emirates.

Civil Defence crews extinguished the blaze while investigations found the owner had purposefully set his car alight. The man was charged with arson and his case referred to public prosecution.
The "tampering of the country’s security and stability" will not be tolerated, Fujairah Police said, who urged the public to abide by UAE laws.

MTN withdraws suit against NCC, pays N50bn from fine

Telecommunications company, MTN has withdrawn its suit against the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and has paid N50 billion from the N780 billion fine, The Cable reports.

NCC, Nigeria's telecommunication regulatory body had fined MTN N1.04 trillion for failing to deactivate 5.1 million unregistered SIM cards. After much appeal, the fine was reduced to N780 billion. Unsatisfied with the reduction in the fine, MTN filed a suit against NCC on Dec. 31st 2015.

Supreme Court okays Rev King to die by hanging

The Supreme Court has okayed the convicted General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Rev. King to die by hanging. In a unanimous judgment Friday afternoon, a seven-man panel of Justices ‎of the apex court led by Justice Walter Onnoghen, upheld the death sentence that was earlier handed to Ezeugo by the Lagos State High Court. Consequently, the court in its lead verdict that was delivered by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, dismissed the appeal the convicted clergy lodged before it.

EFCC arrests former PDP acting chairman, Uche Secondus

The immediate past acting Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondus, has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Pregnant secretary of Pope Francis found dead in her apartment

The Pope's seven-months pregnant receptionist, 34-year-old Miriam Wuolou was found dead in her apartment on the outskirts of Rome. She had reportedly worked at Pope Francis' home and a priests' guesthouse called Santa Marta for years. Wuolou is from Eritrean descent
The Italian press reports she worked as a kind of gatekeeper for the Pontiff, as well as for the bishops and cardinals who stay there.

Senate to Probe DSTV

The Senate has instituted a probe into the activities of DSTV owned by the South African based Multichoice Africa, in Nigeria. At the plenary session yesterday February 24th, the Senators expressed dissatisfaction over the services of the company when Senator Isah Hamma Misau (APC, Bauchi Central) sponsored a motion tagged, " Unwholesome practices of Multichoice Nigeria (DSTV).Misau while moving the motion, accused Multichoice of dominating the Nigerian satellite television market, thereby enabling it to engage in negative and unhealthy practices amongst which are arbitrary increase in subscription charges, refusal to adopt pay 'as-you-use' model applicable in other countries, poor service delivery and absence of toll free lines for customers complaints.

Two University undergraduates arrested in Enugu for killing a Nigerian woman the day she arrived from America

EFCC arraigns man over N57.7m fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, February 11, arraigned one Robert Daniel Onyeani before Justice E. N. Anyadike of the Federal High Court of Umuahia, Abia State on a four-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence and issuance of dud cheque to the tune of N57, 704,000.00 (Fifty-Seven Million, Seven Hundred and Four Thousand Naira).

11 killed as 2 female suicide bombers attack a burial ceremony in Cameroon

11 people were killed after two female suicide bombers attacked a burial ceremony at Nguechewe, a village in Cameroon's northern border region with Nigeria this morning. Over 30 people were injured during the attack.
"The villagers were gathered for the wake when two suicide attackers joined them, pretending to be family members," a source told AFP.
A police officer said several children, including a boy aged six and a 15-year-old, were among the victims. Those injured have been take to a regional hospital in Maroua.

11 people sentenced to 300 lashes & 1year imprisonment for having a beachside party in Saudi Arabia

Six women and five men have reportedly been sentenced to 300 lashes of the cane and 1-year imprisonment after neighbors reported them to the police for having a beachside party.
Police found images of indecent pictures and alcohol after a raid on a beachside villa in Jedda, Saudi Arabia and charged the offenders with 'obscenity'.

The group were initially given jail sentences ranging from eight days to a year and 150 lashes, according to a report by Breitbart, but their prison terms were increased and their flogging sentence raised to 300 lashes after a failed appeal.
In Saudi Arabia, alcohol drinking is banned, women are not allowed to mix with men unless they are related and women are not allowed to wear dressing that shows off their skin.

N10bn discovered in education budget was a typographical error

Days after the Senate Committee on Higher Education raised an alarm over a N10 billion discovered in the Ministry of Education's 2016 budget, the Chairman of the committee, Sen. Binta Masi Garba, says that the N10 billion discovered in the budget is meant for the Universal basic Education Commission and was a typographical error from the office of the National Planning and Budget.

Chad's president to contest election for a 5th term

Nigerian Court jails two Nigerians caught smuggling $5.4m cash

Two Nigerians, Ojukwu Nnamdi Rowland and Ngene Linus Chibuike (pictured above), who were arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while attempting to smuggle $5, 424,270 USD out of the country in October last year, have been convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment respectively by Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

Nigeria Defence Academy reacts to video of army Cadets beating a man for complimenting a female officer

The Nigerian Defence Academy has reacted to the video that went viral yesterday showing army Cadets torturing a young man for saying a female officer was beautiful (Read here). According to a statement by the Academy, preliminary investigation so far shows that the incident happened somewhere in Lagos in 2014. The statement reads;

"The attention of The Nigerian Defence Academy has been drawn to a trending video showing Cadets beating some persons. Please note that NDA is investigating the incident. Preliminary investigation has confirmed the incident to have occurred in 2014 somewhere in Lagos while the Cadets were on break. NDA as a responsible institution saddled with task of producing future military leaders will not in anyway tolerate such unruly and flagrant mistreatment of Nigerians. Dabota Lawson Files for Divorce from Billionaire Hubby Sunny Aku

It has now been confirmed that the former beauty queen has filed for divorce from her husband of two years with reports that she could no longer “live in fear of the unknown”.
According to SDK who broke the news exclusively, Dabota Lawson actually moved out of Sunny Aku’s house over 4 months ago and at some point her husband had to get family and friends to beg her to return home.
According to reports, Dabota revealed in the divorce papers filed that Sunny Aku was technically still married as at the time they had their wedding in December 2014, and on those grounds she will not continue with the marriage.

2 Nigerians among money mules jailed in the UK for helping to defraud a company of £3.8 million

A group of money mules who helped defraud Wonga of £3.8 million by having cash-funneled into their accounts have been jailed, one in absentia because he fled to Nigeria.

Over a 14-month period starting in April 2012, over 19,000 fraudulent loan applications totalling £6.2 million were submitted to the company using stolen identities.
