Housewife seeks for divorce over tea and bread

…another for soap and detergent
A House Wife, Uwanin Takai has taken her husband to Takai Sharia Court in Kano State on Friday, seeking for divorce due to lack of proper feeding as the husband provides her with a meal per day.
However, the man, Ubaliyo Takai, disputed his wife`s claim, saying that his wife insisted on being served with tea and bread every morning, which he could not afford.
“I married the woman two months ago. She told me that she was fed up with eating cooked guinea corn every day and I changed her diet to eight tubers of cassava daily.”
The Sharia Court Judge, Malam Auwalu Bashir, admonished the couple and urged them to reconcile their differences which they did in the court room.
In a related development, Usaina Fititi also sued her husband before the same court, asking for divorce on the ground that the man was not providing soap and detergent to her.
The court’s presiding officer advised Fititi`s husband to reconcile with his wife amicably and to always take care of her needs. (NAN)

2012 UTME: Only 3 candidates scored above 300–JAMB

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. ’Dibu Ojerinde, on Friday said only three out of the 1.5 million candidates who sat for the 2012 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations scored 300 marks and above.

Ojerinde said this while announcing the release of the results of the examination, which took place last Saturday.

He explained that other categories of scores showed that 336,330 candidates scored between 1-169 marks, 374,920 scored between 170-199 marks, while 601,151 scored between 200-249 marks.

Others were 71,339 candidates, who scored between 250 and 269. On the whole, 72,243 scored more than 250 marks.

According to the JAMB registrar, the number of invalid/incomplete results is drastically reduced when compared to what obtained two years ago.

Ojerinde said, “In 2010, 96,451 results were recorded invalid, while in 2011, the figure reduced drastically to 28,069.

“Hence, it became imperative for us to insist on the need for candidates to be most careful, just as we have stressed that in any examination, taking time to read and understand instructions is part of the examination.

“The aggressive and sustained awareness campaign mounted by the board in the last two years has produced positive results, as the figure for the 2012 UTME has been drastically reduced to 5,161.”

He announced that a total of 52 centres, with Rivers State having the highest number of 24, have had their results withheld on suspicion of examination malpractices.

While giving a breakdown of institutions with the highest number of applicants, the JAMB boss said the University of Lagos was first with 83,865 applicants, representing 5.58 per cent of the total applications.

He said, “Our experience this time is consistent with previous trends – that Nigerians have a higher preference for universities ahead of other tertiary institutions.

“Unfortunately, these universities still have constraints with their carrying capacities. For instance, UNILAG, which took the lead this year with 83,865 candidates recorded the highest applications of 99,115 in 2011 UTME and from the carrying capacity figure given by NUC, it can only admit 9,507.

“These figures are only for most preferred choice and do not include those who chose UNILAG as their second choice.”

Nigerian Music producer Samklef and wife welcome baby boy

It certainly feels like male-bashing season. Every other day there’s a new blog post, or article, or snide tweet admonishing women not to date this type of guy or why that type of guy is wrong for them. The way these women carry on, one would think all men were either a cold or calculating sociopath who only wants to jump into bed with every woman; or beer guzzling, unambitious zombies, devoted only to watching football.
But you see, that is not the case. Women happen to have more baggage than men (pun intended) and men have the gift of spotting baggage-carriers from afar off, as well as the skill to avoid them.
Well, most men… If you’re one of the hapless souls who do not, here are the 8 types of women that no young Nigerian man should date. At all.
1. The Barbie. The only thing Barbie has, is her pretty face. Finish. She’s the type of woman that doesn’t know much about anything. Hell, she doesn’t care much about anything! As long as her pretty face is intact, the world can burn for all she cares.

Jennifer Hudson to perform at Nigerian Idol final

If everything goes according to plans, Grammy Awards winner and American Idol, Jennifer Hudson, might be the headlining act at the grand finale of the Nigerian Idol holding in April. According to sources close to the show’s Nigerian franchisee, Optima Media Group, Hudson has been approached and is ready to visit Nigeria for the first time. “We have concluded all arrangements to make her perform at the idol finals. In fact, organisers of the American Idol are the go-between. So, it is taken for granted that she will be in Nigeria in April.  Currently a major force in the comity of leading American vocalists, Hudson rose to fame as a finalist in the 2004 edition of the American Idol. In 2006, she was cast in the film adaptation of the musical, Dreamgirls, alongside Beyonce, Eddy Murphy and Jamie Foxx. Her superb interpretation of her character won her all the major awards in Hollywood including the Oscars and Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actress in 2007. Despite suffering personal tragedies in 2008 when her mother, nephew and brother were killed, Hudson’s musical and acting careers have been on the rise. Noteworthy is that when Hudson, whose vocal range and ability has been compared with the late Whitney Houston, comes to Nigeria, she will share the stage with multiple Grammy Awards nominee; Nigeria’s own Afrobeat star, Femi Kuti. The source says Femi has agreed to perform at the final show. A pointer to this was his presence as guest judge at the Fela tribute night last weekend where he mentored the last three contestants, Mercy, Joe Blue and Stephen Onochie and taught them a trick or two on how to make music of Grammy Awards standard. Jointly opening the show, the trio sang Fela’s “Water”, after which the last girl standing, Mercy, dovetailed into Victor Uwaifo’s Joromi. She rounded off her performance with an applause-worthy rendition of Fela’s Zombie. So impressed was Fela’s heir that he rated Mercy’s performance a triple A plus, mentioning that she reminded him of his grandmother, the activist, Funmilayo. Next was Stephen Onochie, who teed off with an energetic performance of Flavour’s Adanma, before performing Fela’s classic, Gentleman. Joe Blue on the other hand settled for ‘Palava’ which also earned him commendations from the audience and judges. How these commendations translate into vote will be seen on the final day of show. Project manager, Tiwa Medubi says, “It is true when they say time flies when you are having lots of fun. It has been an incredibly hectic few months and suddenly a star will be unveiled. This is what we all have been waiting for from the first day. We wish the remaining contestants all the best; they deserve to win.”
